Previewing and picking day two of state volleyball
Posted by Rhett Workman on November 12, 2011 SVSJ

Time again to talk volleyball. First, last night, Mount Si fell in the quarterfinals of the WIAA state 3A volleyball tournament in Lacey to Mount Spokane in four, 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 25-15. No stats yet from Mount Si, so we’ll just mention they play in a little bit against Camas in a loser-out game. With that, here’s our picks for today’s final day of the state tournament, at St. Martin’s University.

MOUNT SI vs. Camas – The last time these two teams met at state, in 2009, the contest started way late in the evening and was not done until well after midnight, and it was quite the barnburner, too, with the Wildcats winning in five in a contest whose time frame called into question how well the WIAA was doing in accommodating two state tournaments on just four courts in the Tri-Cities. Well, after two very tough matches yesterday, and with an early wake-up call today, the Wildcats will have to battle some fatigue if they want a chance at another trophy. If they can get the tired out of their eyes and play at their top level, they should be fine. We’re not so sure, however, they can do that, especially if they stayed up last night to listen to the football game (even though that ended at a relatively reasonable hour, just after 9:00).

Wildcats rebound from 0-2 hole to win first round state matchup against Meadowdale, 11-11

Mount Si’s volleyball team knew that their first round game this morning against the Meadowdale Mavericks at the WIAA 3A state tournament at St. Martin’s University in Lacey was not going to be easy. And it wasn’t. But the Wildcats found a way to rebound from a slow start and fought off a strong challenge from the Northwest District champions from Lynnwood. READ ARTICLE

Previewing and picking day one of the WIAA 3A State Volleyball Tournament, including Mount Si’s two contests

Time now to talk state volleyball. Mount Si is waking up bright and early this morning down in Lacey, as they get ready to start their fifth straight state tournament. Leading it off: the Meadowdale Mavericks.

WIAA STATE 3A TOURNAMENT, FIRST ROUND
MOUNT SI WILDCATS VS. MEADOWDALE MAVERICKS
ST. MARTIN’S UNIVERSITY, LACEY, THIS MORNING – APPROX. 9:45 AM

Mount Si and Meadowdale have never met at state, and in fact this is the second time during this current five-year run that the Wildcats have opened with an opponent not from the West Central or Southwest Districts. The Mavericks, out of Wesco, come in highly-ranked and with a strong record. We gave you a peek at them earlier this week; you can see that here. READ ARTICLE

Wildcat football and volleyball punch state berths after huge victories
Posted by Rhett Workman on November 6, 2011 - Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal

Big night for Mount Si last night as two teams punched state berths.

Wildcat volleyball blasts their way to state for fifth straight year
If there was any question about how Mount Si’s volleyball team would respond emotionally after their tough quarterfinal loss to Bainbridge Thursday night in the SeaKing District Tournament at Sammamish High School in Bellevue, those questions were answered quickly yesterday. A sleeping giant had awoke, and that giant is now headed to state.

Mount Si scored wins over Liberty, Holy Names and Mercer Island, all in dominating fashion at SHS, to punch the SeaKing’s #3 berth, the Wildcats’ fifth straight state entry.

The Wildcats opened with a 25-17, 20-25, 25-15, 25-13 rout of the Patriots. Lyndsay Carr led the way with 19 kills and Lauren Smith added a staggering 41 assists as Mount Si moved into a winner-to-state game against Holy Names, a matchup we told you yesterday was going to be tough. Sarah McDonald had other ideas, though. 23 kills and 11 digs from the star senior propelled the Wildcats to a 25-15, 25-15, 25-23 thrashing of the Cougars which locked up the state berth. Rachel Hayford added 14 digs. Smith delivered another 38 assists, along with 16 digs.

Wildcat volleyball’s run to state hits bump in road at hands of Bainbridge, 11-3 Posted by Rhett Workman on November 4, 2011 - SVSJ

EDITOR’S NOTE: We have a commentary about this match coming up, talking about why fans shouldn’t worry about the team’s state chances despite the defeat.

Mount Si’s girls volleyball team’s drive to state ran into a bump in the road last night, as they fell to a very good Bainbridge team in the opening game of the SeaKing District Tournament at Sammamish High School in Bellevue.

SVSJ commentary: Wildcat volleyball may have lost district opener, but don’t worry, folks, this team still has strong chance to make state
Posted by Rhett Workman on November 4, 2011 - SVSJ

Last night’s loss by Mount Si’s volleyball team, while it certainly may be disappointing to the team and its fans, really doesn’t mean much in the larger scheme of things. Our message to fans is simple: Keep the faith.

The Wildcats ran into a pretty strong Bainbridge team, who beat Mount Si in a three-game sweep. While we are ourselves sad about the Wildcats losing, we would also add we are not surprised. Not because of anything concerning Mount Si, who has improved mightily over the last couple of weeks, but moreso because of how good this Spartan team very much is.

Previewing and picking the SeaKing volleyball’s first day, including Mount Si’s district opener - Posted by Rhett Workman on November 3, 2011 - SVSJ

Time to talk some volleyball. Mount Si is within two wins of punching its fifth straight state berth, a streak unmatched in school history for this program. The Wildcats look to get win one tonight in the quarterfinals of the SeaKing District Tournament.

The Wildcats from the looks of it appear to have drawn the toughest quarterfinal matchup. Even though Mount Si won the KingCo Tournament last Saturday over Mercer Island to earn the league’s #1 slot to districts, thanks to how the Metro tournament fared, the Wildcats will end up with the winner of a game pitting two mid-range teams from the league’s tougher division, the Mountain Division. Two teams that in past years have been very strong foes, and Bainbridge this year is back in that arena, currently with a 10-6 mark on the season.

Wildcat volleyball makes it two-for-two against arch-rivals and sweeps KingCo regular season and tourney titles as result, 10-29
Posted by Rhett Workman on October 30, 2011 - SVSJ

Monday, the Mount Si volleyball team scored a KingCo regular season crown by beating their arch-rivals from Mercer Island. Last night, the Wildcats were looking to take the KingCo Tournament crown by beating the Islanders again, and thanks to the efforts once again of their top players, Mount Si made it two-for-two.

The Wildcats scored a 25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 25-17 win over MI at Sammamish High School in Bellevue to win the tourney and the #1 seed from KingCo into the SeaKing District Tournament. Mount Si will meet either Bainbridge or Blanchet from the Metro League in the SeaKing quarterfinals Thursday night at Sammamish. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Wildcat volleyball gets recognized well by league, then shows why in three-set sweep of LW in KingCo Semis, 10-27
Posted by Rhett Workman on October 28, 2011- Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal

Mount Si’s volleyball team as expected advanced to the KingCo tournament title game tomorrow, and also as expected, their top players did most of the damage.

Junior Libero Rachel Hayford led the way with 14 digs to pace Mount Si’s 25-13, 25-15, 25-15 sweep of Lake Washington at Sammamish High School in Bellevue. The Kangs advanced to last night’s contest with a four-set win over Bellevue.

Sarah McDonald added 13 kills and nine digs, while Lyndsay Carr pounded out 11 kills of her own to aid the Wildcat efforts. Lauren Smith also recorded 14 assists and five service aces.

Time now to bring back a feature of this blog come playoff time. For you fans new to the Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal, in addition to our weekly Friday football previews and picks, we do the same for all playoff action, regardless of what sport it’s in. We give you a quick primer on what to look for in the matchup, then we offer our thoughts on who we think will win. So with that, let’s get going.

Tonight is the first postseason game for the 2011 Mount Si volleyball team, as it embarks on a road they hope will result in their fifth straight berth to the state tournament.

The Wildcats will meet the winner of the 4/5 game between the Kangs and Wolverines. Both of those teams look to be worthy opponents, considering how well they played the Wildcats at Mount Si this season, so either way, this will potentially be a tough game, especially if Mount Si starts out slow. But as we noted in our KingCo tournament preview yesterday, the Wildcats have some big players that they can rely on for strong efforts. Such as senior Sarah McDonald (24 kills Monday in Wildcat win over MI), junior Lauren Smith and sophomore Lyndsay Carr.

MOUNT SI – Volleyball is where we head, and we give this to a special senior in recognition of her historic achievement last week. Sarah McDonald pounded out a school-record 33 kills to help Mount Si’s volleyball team rebound from an 0-2 hole to stun Interlake in five sets last Monday. The victory was a tremendous one for a Wildcat team that has been looking for a season-defining moment, and that may have just been it. READ ARTICLE

Mount Si volleyball plays its best at right time
Locks up KingCo Title, 10-24
Posted by Rhett Workman on October 25, 2011 - SVSJ

Mount Si’s volleyball team is playing its best volleyball at the right time, going into postseason. Last night, they showed that, and in doing so, brought home another KingCo championship.

In front of a very large crowd for Senior Night, the Wildcats took care of the Mercer Island Islanders in three sets, 25-23, 25-9, 25-23. Mount Si finished the regular season with a 13-1 league record, two games ahead of MI, who finished at 11-3. Had the Islanders won last night, both the Wildcats and MI would have finished tied atop the standings, but the Islanders would have won the title on basis of head-to-head meetings. MI had already beaten the Wildcats once this season.

Historic performance helps Mount Si volleyball rally from huge hole to stun Interlake, 10-17-11
Posted by Rhett Workman on October 18, 2011 - SVSJ

History was made last night by a Mount Si volleyball player, and that historic accomplishment helped the Wildcats rally from down two sets to stun a very dangerous Interlake Saints team.

Sarah McDonald recorded 33 kills as Mount Si won 23-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-14, 15-9. The 33 kills set a new school record for most kills in a match, previously set in 2008 during two games at the state tournament by then-Wildcat player Miranda Pratt, who is now playing collegiately at Texas A&M International. In each of those two games, Pratt pocketed 31 kills.

Talking playoffs, Mount Si style...
Posted by Rhett Workman on October 18, 2011 SVSJ

We’re getting now into the stretch drive of the fall sports season and with that, it’s time to talk postseason possibilities. Here’s how things shake down for all the Mount Si fall sports teams at the moment.

Mount Si is on track to make the postseason once again. Wildcat coach Bonnie Foote has taken her teams to districts at least for the last eight years in a row, although we could be off by a year or two on that. Mount Si, depending on what happens with their remaining games, should finish either first or second in KingCo, earning them an automatic district berth.

Wildcat volleyball grabs key win against Juanita, 10-12
Posted by Rhett Workman on October 14, 2011 SVSJ

Mount Si’s volleyball team played maybe its best match of the season Wednesday night, and things appear to be looking up for this young Wildcat squad.

The Wildcats beat a steadily improving Juanita team 25-17, 25-17, 25-22 in a very well-played match by both sides at Mount Si High School. The Rebels showed that they are still dangerous despite some early-season distractions which threatened to derail their season, but Mount Si also showed the form that they will need to go far this postseason.

Wildcat volleyball overcomes challenge from Lake Washington to score victory Posted by Rhett Workman on October 11, 2011 SVSJ

The KingCo schedule has been an interesting one for Mount Si’s volleyball team. Even though the Wildcats are tied for first, they have had some growing pains along the way as they continue to re-tool with younger players. Mount Si battled through a little bit of that last night, but still got it done when it counted.

The Wildcats rallied after a slow start and fought through some adversity to take the 21-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-13 win over a very scrappy Lake Washington Kangaroos squad which gave the Mount Si ladies a lot of problems all match long, with solid defense and strong serving. Wildcat coach Bonnie Foote, though, had a bit different take." I think we gave ourselves fits,” an unhappy Foote said. “My expectation is when you step on that court, you transfer what you did in practice on(to) that court and you show off what you work on in practice every single day, and I did not see that tonight.”

Some high-school volleyball highlights from Tuesday
Posted by Sandy Ringer - Seattle Times Sports Writer 10.11.11

There were some very interesting volleyball matches played Tuesday night (including at least one upset). Interlake 3, Mercer Island 1

This is the upset I alluded to earlier. Interlake is having a fine season and should do well in 2A post-season play. But Mercer Island was ranked No. 7 in 3A, despite last week's 3-2 loss to Juanita. The Islanders beat Interlake 3-0 about a month ago. This time, the Saints got outstanding performances from Kori Maitlen (13 kills, 18 digs, 8 aces), Alyssa Deardorff (35 assists) and Lauren Davis (29 digs).

I e-mailed Mercer Island coach Susan McKay about the loss, and she replied that she didn't want to make excuses but that injuries are hurting the team right now (middle blocker Lottie MacAulay is sidelined indefinitely with a back issue and Madelyn Bloom is done for the season with a knee injury). McKay also acknowledged that the Islanders made way too many mental errors for the second match in a row. MI was led by Sara Lindquist (14 kills), Lorial Yeadon (13 kills, 12 digs), Rachel Bowdle (17 digs) and Carly Wilson (36 assists). This was a great win for the Saints as they gear up for post-season play.

More on Mount Si’s volleyball victory over Juanita Monday
By: Rhett Workman - SVSJ

As we told you yesterday, the Wildcats went on the road and scored a key league win over the Rebels Monday night in three sets. Well, there appears to be a back story developing about this contest, and it’s a very troubling one in our view.

Sandy Ringer, who covers high school sports for the Seattle Times, reported on the Times’ high school sports blog yesterday that the Rebels played the match under an interim coach after longtime head coach Teena Bambolo was surprisingly shown the door just prior to the contest. According to Ringer’s item, Bambolo was given the news during a hastily-called, and reported to be very short, meeting between her and school administrators. READ ARTICLE

Wildcat volleyball grabs key league victory, 9-19-11

Mount Si’s volleyball team scored a very important KingCo road victory last night, taking care of the Juanita Rebels in three sets on JHS’s home floor in Kirkland. Senior Sarah McDonald and sophomore Lyndsay Carr both had 13 kills each to lead the Wildcats to the 25-16, 25-22, 25-14 victory over a Rebel team seen as a possible challenger to Mount Si for the KingCo title this season. Wildcat volleyball has tough time with out-of-state teams at Kent tournament, 9-17-11
Posted by Rhett Workman on September 19, 2011 SVSJ

Mount Si’s volleyball team found life to be a little challenging last Saturday at the Kent Classic volleyball tournament. Against out of state opponents, that is.

The Wildcats went 0-3 against non-Washington foes in the event, and those struggles helped to push Mount Si into the bronze bracket, where they scored wins over Kentridge and Camas to take 11th place overall in the event out of 30 teams entered.

Mount Si volleyball taking on top teams today 09.17.11
By: Rhett Workman - Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal

The Wildcats are playing in the Kent Classic, which started a short time ago and will run all day at Kentwood High School in Covington. The Kent Classic tournament has been a favorite of Mount Si coach Bonnie Foote, as she has taken Wildcat teams to this event in the past. This tournament, one of several Saturday tournaments during the high school season, will pit the Wildcats against teams from all over western Washington, including top teams such as Eastside Catholic, Skyline, Issaquah and Kentwood, although the event this year has also drawn teams from Oregon and Idaho. In fact, Mount Si in pool play this morning is scheduled to play Central Catholic from Portland. More information is available by logging on to the
tournament website.

Step up time: Young Mount Si volleyball team chasing state tradition
By SETH TRUSCOTT - Snoqualmie Valley Record Editor - Sep 13 2011

It's going to take a lot of hard work to earn that fourth state appearance. That's why Sarah McDonald comes to the gym every day, ready to compete. McDonald, one of three seniors on the Mount Si varsity volleyball team, knows she has a younger team compared to the groups that took sixth at state in 2009 and 2010. "But everyone's going to step up," she said. McDonald, who shared outside hitting duties last fall, brings the kills. She's backed up by senior Brooke Bonner at Libero. Third senior Krista Galloway, a relative newcomer to the program who started on varsity last year, is a mid-blocker. All three  upper class women are hungry for state. READ ARTICLE

Wildcat volleyball makes it through rough patches to sink Sammamish
Posted by Rhett Workman on September 13, 2011 SVSJ

Mount Si’s volleyball team had some bumps in the road once again last night as they hosted the Sammamish Totems, but those mistakes did not hurt the Wildcats, as they, thanks to some strong serving from several players, including Sarah McDonald, made short work of the Kingco’s cellar-dwellers. Scores were 25-7, 25-16, 25-9. READ ARTICLE

SVSJ preview: Mount Si volleyball a little greener than in past years, but core players look to guide team to fifth straight state appearance
Posted by Rhett Workman on September 4, 2011 Snoqualmie Valley Sport Journal

Mount Si’s volleyball program has enjoyed a stellar run of success, with four straight state tournament appearances, and last year, finishing sixth. This year, though, could bring a little bit of a challenge to the table, as the team has a lot of new blood. But, the core of the team aims to pilot this group once again back to state.

The Wildcats have back for her 12th season at the helm coach Bonnie Foote. Foote is excited about what lies ahead. “I’m excited. We are really, really young and inexperienced in a lot of areas, but I think that some of our returning players have raised the bar in our practice and the rest of them, the inexperienced ones, are coming along because of that,” Foote said.

Wildcat volleyball doesn’t make it easy on themselves, but get season-opening match sweep of Patriots
Posted by Rhett Workman on September 9, 2011 SVSJ

Mount Si’s volleyball team, as noted in the Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal’s recent preview, is a little “greener” than in past years, with a lot of young newcomers taking over slots left by graduated seniors who made up a lot of the core group of players that has helped this program roll off four straight state tournament appearances.
